With an increase of e commerce, the demand for truck drivers is rising, which has lead to a few changes in transportation industry trends to keep up with the supply and demand. Specifically, new have been created to take the burden and stress off of fleet owners and drivers. Therefore, these new technologies are changing the face of trucking for the better.

Some of the transportation industry trends that are increasing in popularity are:

1) Self driving semi trucks

With a significant driver shortage affecting the industry, its up to technology to lessen the load on drivers and continue to keep up with demand. Self driving semi trucks are gaining attention in the trucking industry. In fact, this technology is already being produced, tested and discussed by government officials to determine regulations for the self driving machines.

2) Driver facing cameras

As a form of fleet management, driver facing cameras are a great resource for drivers to reduce liability in the event of an accident. The benefits of having a driver facing camera is to alert drivers whenever they are distracted or too tired. In the end, trucking companies like us save a lot of money by reducing the probability of an accident by using this type of technology.

3) Dash Cams

Similar to the driver facing cameras, a dash cam is used to monitor the actions of drivers on the road. For example, some dash cams have the ability to track speed and brake reaction to determine how safe the driver is operating.

But, that’s not all they’re good for! In terms of fleet owners, dash cams allow them to manage their drivers actions, allow management to stay in contact with drivers and some even have automatic safeguards built in to increase safety for drivers.

4) Trucker apps

In the trucking industry, it’s never a bad thing to make things easier on your drivers. Especially, when it comes to using technology to increase efficiency and safety on the open road.

In fact, new trucker apps and other transportation industry trends are being created for drivers and their fleet owners to stay as efficient as possible and to make drivers’ lives easier. For example, these new apps offer  navigation, truck driver management and even help to monitor a truckers diet.

5) Electric 18-wheelers

As an eco-friendly alternative, electric semi trucks are turning into the most talked about technology happening in the industry. Not only will these vehicles save the environment, but they might even save fleet owners money in the long run! Although it has not been passed by the government yet, this technology could be a great asset for all in the industry.

Other technologies that are continuing to change transportation industry trends are:

  1. Telematics: A way to monitor a vehicle by using GPS and onboard diagnostics to record movements on a computerized map.
  2. Internet of Things (IoT): A type of onboard technology that can alert the driver of a problem happening while they drive their truck.
  3. Logistics: A type of measurement to determine the supply in relation to demand. In relation to trucking, this is a type of measurement is meant to determine how truck drivers and their fleets can keep up with the demands of customers around the U.S.
  4. Electronic logging device (ELD’s): a type of technology that is used to track the amount of Hours of Service (HOS) based on state regulations.

As technology advances, it continues to change every industry including the trucking industry.  This ultimately is making the jobs of truckers and fleet owners easier!
